With Narrabeen Lake literally on our doorstep, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding (SUP) have become an integral part of our school holiday programs during the summer months. We even have our own private gate at the back of the Centre giving us direct access to Narrabeen Lake.
Before anyone is allowed on the water, our qualified kayaking and SUP instructors teach children all the skills and safety requirements needed to safely enjoy their time on the water.
Kayaking and stand up paddleboarding is the perfect way to keep kids active (and cool) during the summer school holidays.

How to correctly use the paddle
Most first time kayakers are unsure how to correctly hold the paddle. Obviously, if you’re holding the padding the wrong way it will be much harder and take more energy than is required to move through the water. The correct way to hold the paddle is with both hands just over a shoulder width apart. Your knuckles should be in line with the blade. The concave part (the inside curved side) of the paddle blade should be facing away from you. Thinking of the paddle like a spoon moving through the water. It needs to “scoop” the water along as you paddle.
How to get back on your board after falling off
Fall off your stand-up paddleboard is all part of the experience. All beginners (and most experts) fall off. It’s nothing to be ashamed off – plus, it’s a great way to stay cool! Getting wet isn’t usually what most SUPers fear, it’s getting back on the board and losing your paddle that most beginners dread. If you feel like you’re falling off, make sure you fall to the side of your board. It’s also a good idea to leave a few metres at least between you and your friends to make sure you don’t fall on their board (and tip them over too). Walk or swim back to your board and get back on. While lying down on your board, use your hands to paddle back to your paddle which should be floating nearby (hopefully). Once you’ve got your paddle you’re ready to stand up again.
